Microbix’ Influenza Expertise

Microbix was established over 20 years ago as a virology company and has diversified this biologicals business into the biotherapeutic drug and vaccine fields. The Company works with infectious agents in its day-to-day business, supplying viral products to customers worldwide from its base in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Influenza virus is one of a number of products Microbix manufactures.

The Company is required, as a matter of safety in the workplace to protect employees as they handle infectious materials. This is accomplished through education and Microbix employees are highly trained in procedures that protect them and their environment when working with infectious virus. It is this expertise that enables us to formulate a practical plan for employees to protect themselves and their families outside the workplace, in the community and at home. The Company is making this information available for use by the general public.

Our business is highly regulated by government agencies and there is a standard the Company must meet in order to carry on its business. Microbix is in good standing with these government agencies. The Company has prepared the Pandemic Response Plan ensuring that it is consistent with public health advice contained in published guidelines of the Government of Canada, the Ministry of Health, Province of Ontario, Canada and, where applicable, the Centers For Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Why is Microbix preparing a plan to deal with an influenza pandemic?

Besides the obvious human health concerns, such a plan makes good business sense. The disruptions resulting from a pandemic could interfere with the ability of businesses to function, but a good plan can minimize the impact.

There are four elements to our plan:

1. We will advise our employees of steps they can take to protect themselves and their immediate families.
2. We will provide employees with a ToolKittm of materials to assist them in protecting themselves.
3. We will implement measures so that we can continue to manage our business effectively during any disruptions resulting from a pandemic.
4. We will work with our customers to minimize interruptions in the supply of Microbix products during a pandemic.

Our company produces materials used to diagnose viral infections, including influenza. This makes us an integral part of the surveillance system assessing both normal influenza infection and new infections which might result in a pandemic.

We need our employees to be protected both for their own well being and so that they can continue to provide essential materials to our customers during a pandemic. The key to keeping them protected and healthy is to minimize exposure to infection. We are taking steps to make all staff aware of the potential risks and providing information on how to minimize those risks. Microbix is also developing a ToolKittm of materials which will be available to employees to assist them in providing protection in their homes and in the community.

As a society we have time to prepare for a pandemic but we have to start now. A good first step is for all of us to get our annual flu vaccination as soon as it becomes available. While this vaccine will not be effective against new flu strains which might trigger a pandemic, it will provide protection against the normal flu infections that occur during the winter and spring. This helps reduce the strain on the health care system and frees up resources to deal with a potential pandemic.

The scientific literature also shows that most people develop flu infections when they inadvertently touch their nose, eyes, or mouth with hands that have become contaminated with flu virus. Washing your hands frequently and using sanitizer is one of the best ways to reduce your chance of becoming infected. This applies both during the normal flu season and during a pandemic.
